Complete information about what constitutes an ophthalmological emergency, what to do and how to contact us on weekends.
The following symptoms require presentation immediately or same day to an ophthalmologist. Do not wait for a regular appointment if you recognise any of the signs below.
Sudden blurred vision, total or partial, in one or both eyes. May indicate retinal vascular occlusion, retinal detachment or stroke.
A blow to the eye, a cut, or the penetration of a foreign body (splinter, metal, sand). Requires immediate evaluation to prevent infection or permanent damage.
Contact with chemicals (lime, detergent, solvents, acids) or hot objects. Rinse immediately with water for at least 15 minutes, then seek emergency care.
Sudden severe pain associated with marked redness, nausea or halos around lights — possibly acute angle-closure glaucoma. This is a genuine medical emergency.
Sudden appearance of flashes, many new floaters or a curtain partially covering vision may signal retinal detachment — maximum urgency.
Intense redness with heavy discharge, large eyelid swelling, extreme sensitivity to light — severe conjunctivitis, keratitis, which can worsen rapidly without treatment.
A child who has suffered eye trauma, contact with a chemical, sudden squinting, persistent red eye or refuses to open one eye.
These conditions require a regular Monday–Friday appointment, not a weekend or out-of-hours visit.
The Oculis clinic is regularly closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Nevertheless, ophthalmological emergencies do not follow a timetable.
Eye trauma, chemical burns or early retinal detachment treated within the first 2–6 hours have a significantly better visual prognosis than cases treated after 24–48 hours. That is why our doctors are available by phone on weekends exclusively for real emergencies.
If you call and the situation is considered urgent by the doctor, you will be guided immediately and, if necessary, an emergency consultation will be arranged.
Please call only for genuine emergencies on weekends. Routine appointments are scheduled exclusively Monday–Friday.
Appointments are made exclusively within the hours below, Monday–Friday.
Follow these steps in order to act correctly and quickly.
Describe your symptoms clearly, which eye and how long ago they appeared. The doctor will assess the urgency.
Avoid touching, pressing or rubbing the affected eye. If there is a visible foreign body, do not try to remove it yourself.
Rinse the eye with clean water for a minimum of 15–20 minutes before and on the way to the clinic. Do not stop rinsing to call — do both simultaneously if possible.
If you cannot contact us and the situation is serious, go to Sighetu-Marmației County Hospital A&E and request an emergency ophthalmology consultation.
Do not wait. Call now and the doctor will decide together with you what needs to be done.
